She smiled at me so happily and I grinned back at her and she threw her head back and said joyfully, “Liam I can’t believe were getting married!”
I smiled brighter and rubbed her leg and said, “Neither can I, I can’t believe I got someone as beautiful as you.”
She blushed and leaned over and kissed me on the lips and let her fingers run through my hair and I played with a strand of her dark curly hair.
“I love you”, she whispered.
“I love you too”, I whispered back.
Then a car slammed into her side and threw us across the road rolling.
My breath caught in my chest and I couldn’t breathe.
I blacked out for awhile but when I came to I heard sirens and my rough breathing.
I saw bright lights and heard people talking and I felt bloody streaming from my legs, arms, head, chest, every where really and when I looked over I saw something that scared me to death.
My hand went right through the door of the car. Through the metal and all. I looked to make sure it was still attached to my arm and it was but it was purple, blue, and trembling and I couldn’t feel it.
It was trembling along with the rest of my body though.
Tears streamed down my face and my throat let out whimpers and I heard cutting and I whined and a man said, “Its okay were getting you out. Is it just you in there?”
I looked over then and saw Danielle her head was against the dash and blood was streaming from her head.
“Nnnooo my girlfriend’s in here too get her out first! Please…” I cried.
“Okay sir just stay with us.”
I nodded and thought about how much I wished to boys were here I felt all alone right now.
They got Danielle’s door open and got her out and then the man said, “Okay son were gonna get you now your hands stuck in the door so we’ll have to cut around it don’t be scared were not gonna hurt you.”
I nodded tears were still streaming down my face.
“What’s your name”, the man said trying to distract me from the sound of the saw cutting around my hand.
“Lii…Liam…Payne”, I stuttered.
“Liam Payne okay were gonna get you out of here. Okay?”
I nodded again and said, “Okay.”
“Okay now we’ve got room for you to pull you hand out can you move it?”
I started move my hand out it trembled and moved slowly and they opened the door and pulled me out gently and put me on a gurney and moved me into the ambulance.
“Danielle? Is she okay”, I asked?
“We don’t know yet they already drove off to the hospital with her.”
I cried and the man said, “Hey, hey who do we need to call son?”
“Myy myy mates and mum, dad, sisters, and manager probably…” I cried.
“Manager? You a movie star or something”, he asked?
“Singger”, I sobbed.
“Okay were gonna make sure to keep you alive so you can keep singing. Okay?”
I nodded and he said, “By the way my names Arthur.”
I smiled lightly and they started to clean up the blood and patch up some of the wounds but they tried their best to leave my hand alone.
They rushed me into the hospital and started to start an IV and stitch me up more and then a guy said, “Hello Liam I’m Dr.Fletcher I’m going to assess your hand function okay?”
I nodded and he sat down and gently touched my hand examining it and said, “We’ve called your friends and family they should be here soon.”
I nodded and said, “What about my girlfriend Danielle? Is she okay?”
I saw a look in his eyes and I screamed, “No! No! No!”
“She’s brain dead but Liam you have to keep calm we need to fix you.”
I banged my head back and sobs escaped me and I cried terribly.
“Can you close your fingers?”
I moved them lightly but they didn’t close and he said, “Are you able to keep your hand still?”
I shook my head no and he said, “Okay Liam it looks like you may have so nerve damage but don’t worry were going to do our best to fix it.”
I cried and he said, “How about we let you see you family for one second.”
The boys rushed in and said, “Oh god Liam!”
I sobbed, “Danielle’s deaddd!”
“Aw Liam”, Niall said pushing my hair back.
“It’s going to be okay mate”, Zayn said.
I heard our manager talking to the doctor.
“How long is recovery?”
“At least two months”, he said.
“Great I’m going to have to cancel the tour in Australia thank god I don’t have to cancel the American one too.”
All our manager cared about was us not being able to do tours.
Yep I loved how people treated me as if I were a sack of money and not a person.
Present
“Liam are you excited to be back to work”, the interview lady asked me.
“Ya it should be great”, I said putting a fake smile on my face.
“He’s been meticulously trying to decide on his outfit for his first day back”, Harry laughs.
This interviews words are so planned out to hide exactly what I’m feeling.
Pain and loss.
“So you’re here for your American tour. Exciting right?”
“Yes very” Niall says.
“He loves the food here”, Zayn chuckles.
When the interview ends the boys say, “Hey Li you want to go get a drink.”
I shake my head no and say, “I’m tired I’m gonna just watch TV.”
“I’ll stay with you”, Niall volunteers.
“No go”, I say waving then glaring at my hand as it trembles in the air.
Niall gives a sad smile and then walks out with the rest of the boys and I sit on the couch and rub my hand and bite my lip as it brings up terrible memories.
I turn on the TV and scan through the channels a run across the interview on TV and sigh at the person I’ve become.
Fake and utter plastic.
I haven’t talked to half my other friends in the longest time.
Josh comes in and says, “Hey Li. Where are the other boys?”
“Drinking”, I say.
“Ah surprised Niall’s not skyping with Shannon or Harry with Sophia.”
I bite my lip and look at my lap thinking about how I might be skyping Danielle right now had it not happened.
“Oh sorry mate I didn’t mean to.”
“Its fine”, I say smiling up at him.
“Want me to stay and watch with you”, Josh asks?
“No go hang with the boys.”
He nods and says, “Have a good night Liam.”
I nod and flip open my laptop and turn on the videos of me and Danielle and tears run down my face.
I never told the boys we got engaged that night it would just add to the real tragedy of the story.
I shut my eyes and fall asleep and then I feel a tickle in my stomach and jump and a familiar voice says, “Hey ditcher.”
I sit up and see Kayla, my best friend and I say, “Kayla!”
I pull her into my arms and hug her tight and she cuddles me close and says, “Hey Li.”
“Why are you here?”
“Ran into the boys at the pub and my best friend wasn’t with them so I had to come and see you since you haven’t called me in forever.”
“Ya well a lot has happened”, I say sadly.
“Ya I heard you don’t seem to want to talk about it so we won’t if you want to at some point feel free to I’m here for you but I bet you already have plenty of people giving you sad eyes.”
I smile widely at her and say, “I missed you.”
“I missed you too Li”, she says and sits down next to me and puts her legs in my lap like old times and says, “So what are we watching?”
I grin and rub her leg with my trembling hand and then blush and she grabs it and says, “It must get a lot of exercise moving all the time.”
I laugh and hand her the remote.
She flips through and then she laughs when it lands on toy story.
“You good with this one Li?”
I laugh and say, “Yes.”
Niall walks in and joins us and I can tell he’s smiling at us knowing that this is probably the happiest I’ve been since the accident.
Kayla runs her fingers through my hair and I lean my head on her shoulder.
She yawns and soon we’re all fast asleep on the couch.
I feel as if I’ll need Kayla to ever be okay again.
She’s my best friend.
